Project Update: Oak View Main 42
Oak View Main 42-inch Valve Installation
District Engineering staff coordinated the installation of a 42-inch valve on the 39-inch Oak View Main pipeline. The Oak View Main is a transmission pipeline that feeds water from the Avenue 1 Pump Plant north to the Avenue 2 pump plant, and ultimately all customers northward to Ojai. This portion of the pipeline is located behind the District’s main office. The valve was installed to facilitate a future pipeline inspection to reduce the number of customers affected, and installation was complete without impacting any customers.
First, the existing pipe was exposed by Casitas’ Pipelines crew and measurements were taken. Then the cement coating was chipped away to expose the steel pipe and ‘line stops’ were welded in place. Structural calculations were done for the concrete thrust blocks which are placed to prevent movement of the pipe and valve. Rebar and forms were installed and the concrete was placed for the thrust blocks. Steel pipe supports were also installed. After the concrete cured, the forms were removed.
Bypass piping was connected to allow water to flow while the main pipe was cut and the new valve was installed. The District Pipeline crew then cut the pipe and installed the new 42-inch valve. The bypass piping was removed and the excavation backfilled.
